Stitchery Showcase

Stitchery Showcase is a professionally judged needlework show that is put on by the Guild. What began in 1970 with the first-ever show at Stan Hywet has grown to be a regionally recognized display of talented needle artists of all ages. Be it needlepoint, crewel, cross stitch, quilting or any of a myriad of other needlework techniques, a dedication to the needle arts makes this show possible.

Stitchery Showcase is held every other year in the Manor House Reception Hall and since 2006 has run concurrently with Ohio Mart each October at Stan Hywet. The Guild encourages stitchers and quilters of all specialties to take part in this extraordinary show. You do not need to be a member of the Guild or Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens to display at the show.

Quilting Announcement:

The 2025 Stitchery Showcase will expand the existing categories for quilts to accept free-motion machine quilting, with or without stitch regulation. However, computerized quilting, as well as plastic, wood, and laser-assisted paper template pantograph quilting techniques will not be accepted.

Next Showcase - OCTOBER 2025

What do you plan to enter?

Detailed entry guidelines and forms will be available in June 2025. Sign up for our email list to receive them automatically when they become available.

Due to the expansion of categories for quilts, all quilt entries will require early registration between July 1 and August 15, 2025 to provide the Guild with extra time for space and display planning. More details will be coming soon.

Entry Categories and Judging

Each entry into Showcase is placed into a single category for judging, or it can be designated as Display Only. Each judged piece is also identified as a Non-Original, Adaptation, or Original work. The categories are reviewed and finalized prior to the entry period for each show and typically include the following, along with subcategories where needed:

  • Beading/Jewelry

  • Canvas/Needlepoint

  • Counted Thread

  • Mixed Media

  • Multi Technique

  • Other Technique

  • Quilting

  • Surface Embroidery

The Guild carefully selects a group of nationally known and certified judges for each show, typically four for needlework and one for quilting. The judges take into consideration color, design and texture, workmanship and technique, suitability of materials, and finishing and presentation. The judges are asked to judge against a standard of stitching perfection generally accepted by knowledgeable needlework teachers and judges and to judge as impartially as possible. This means that each category/sub-category can have from zero to many First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention ribbons awarded.

The Stitchery Showcase Committee does not make any recommendations or suggestions to the judges. Guild volunteers attach a registration tag to each piece which gives only the information needed by the judges; the names of the entrants are not visible. In the process of judging, each judge is assigned a different colored dot. During the independent judging within each category, these dots are awarded to the pieces judged worthy of consideration for a ribbon. The dotted pieces are then jointly re-judged by two judges in the category and ribbons are awarded. Each judging division with a category is judged separately which permits like techniques to be judged together.

Special Awards

In addition to First Place, Second Place, Third Place and Honorable Mention ribbons, judged entries are eligible for the following special awards:

Best of Show Needlework is awarded through consensus of the four needlework judges and is selected from those pieces which have been awarded First Place ribbons.

Best of Show Quilting is awarded by the quilting judge from those pieces that have been awarded blue ribbons.

Cromwell Award is awarded for best surface-stitchery judged entry in honor of the crewel embroidery reproductions the Guild stitched for the Cromwell Room at the Stan Hywet.

Deck the Hall Award is awarded to either a quilting or needlework judged entry that best exemplifies the winter holiday season, including but not exclusive to the holidays of Christmas, Hanukkah, or New Year’s as a theme.

Founders' Award is awarded for best needlepoint judged entry stitched on canvas or Congress cloth.

Harvest Award is awarded to either a quilting or needlework judged entry that best exemplifies the fall harvest season, including both Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Judge's Choice is awarded by each of the judges. We ask that they award this ribbon to a piece that appeals to them in a special way or one that they would like to have as their own.

Seiberling Award is awarded to either a quilting or needlework judged entry that best exemplifies Mrs. Seiberling’s love of gardens and flowers.

Technical Excellence Award is awarded to either a quilting or needlework judged entry that displays significant mastery of the technique in which it is stitched.

Tudor Rose Award is presented for best counted-thread judged entry.

People's Choice Awards are selected by attendees at the show and given to both a needlework and quilt entry on the final day.

Advertising and Patrons

Stitchery Showcase is a unique event that celebrates and shares the art of needleworkers.

Generous support from patrons and advertisers helps to cover the costs of putting on the show which include travel expenses and judging fees for nationally known judges, printing costs, supplies such as ribbons and pins, and equipment-rental fees.

The show is typically viewed by well over a thousand visitors to Ohio Mart, and each receives a printed booklet that includes advertisements ranging from a quarter page to a full page and a list of patrons.
